A Workflow That Holds Up
The 3-2-1 rule and a dated catalogue: the method that saved me from losing an entire assignment.

Losing a card only happens once — and once is once too many.
In the field
Something to copy your card onto a second medium at regular intervals. A pocket hard drive with a card reader and automatic copy, a laptop, or in my case a card reader that lets me copy the photographs onto my phone. The card is never formatted until it is full and I need it again. I always carry several cards with me.
Back home
The 3-2-1 rule: three copies, on two distinct media, one of them off-site. In practice: working drive, NAS, and an encrypted remote backup.
| Step | Medium | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Import | Working drive | On every assignment |
| Mirror | Local NAS | Automatic, daily |
| Off-site | Encrypted cloud backup | Live, on every change |
Naming
One folder per assignment, prefixed with the date in YYYY-MM-DD format. Chronological sorting comes for free, and finding an image three years later takes ten seconds.
